Gmach wzniesiony został w latach 1892-1894 jako budynek resursy kupieckiej. Nastepnie rozbudowany został podczas modernizacji 1905-1909. Po II wojnie światowej w budynku przy ulicy Teatralnej znajdowało się w Towarzystwo Przyjaźni Polsko-Radzieckiej. W 1963 roku TPPR zgodziło się na udostepnienie części pomieszczeń Teatrowi Lalek, który funkcjonuje tam po dziś dzień.
