History
Neoklasycystyczny monument na cześć Wiktora Emanuela II potocznie nazywany jest Ołtarzem Ojczyzny. Decyzję o wzniesieniu tej marmurowej budowli w samym centrum Rzymu przy Placu Weneckim, obok Kapitolu i Forum Romanum podjęto w 1882 r. Za projekt odpowiadał Giuseppe Sacconi.
Prace budowlane trwały w latach 1885-1935, w 1911 r. dokonano odsłonięcia nieukończonego jeszcze pomnika.
